The Vice Chancellor Makerere University (MAK) Professor Barnabas Nawangwe and the Director General, Uganda Management Institute (UMI) Dr. James L. Nkata on August 17th 2022 inaugurated 9 Member Pioneer Board of Directors for the Julius Nyerere Leadership Centre (JNLC) at Makerere University. The Directors include; Dr. Saturninus Kasozi Mulindwa (Chair of the Board), Dr. Nansozi K. Muwanga (Executive Director), Ms. Esteri Mugurwa Akandwanaho, Professor Edward Kirumira, Mr. Andrew Tumusiime, Professor Josephine Ahikire, Assoc. Professor Sarah Ssali, Assoc. Professor Gerald Karyeija, and Assoc. Professor Proscovia Namubiru.
Dr. James Nkata called on the Board to position the Centre to be a great resource in terms of:
- Knowledge;
- Skills; and
- Training.
Professor Barnabas Nawangwe, the Vice Chancellor Makerere University, informed the Board that for many years various Centres of Excellence have been set up on paper including Mazrui Centre, Mwai Kibaki Centre, and the Mutebile Centre of Excellence. However, the Julius Nyerere Leadership Centre (JNLC) has been the first one to take off.
Professor Nawangwe called on the Board to prioritise training that integrates all categories of people in leadership including the Private Sector, members of Parliament and staff at Makerere University and Uganda Management Institute. He also called on the Board to focus and plan for the construction of a permanent structure for the JNLC that can also accommodate a Students’ Centre.
