Mwalimu Julius Kambarage Nyerere envisioned a united, self-reliant, and ethically grounded Africa. His ideas on servant leadership, social justice, and Pan-Africanism remain profoundly relevant as Africa faces 21st-century challenges, including rapid urbanization, climate change, inequality, and democratic renewal. Today, the continent’s youth, its largest demographic, represent both a critical force for change and a test of leadership renewal. Africa’s leadership future depends on how effectively young people are equipped to think critically, act ethically, and lead sustainably in a rapidly changing world.

The Julius Nyerere Leadership Centre (JNLC), through its Youth Leadership Training Programmes, continues to nurture a new generation of transformational leaders rooted in the values of integrity, service, and Pan-Africanism. Similarly, the Council for the Development of Social Science Research in Africa (CODESRIA) has been a leading institution advancing knowledge, research, and policy dialogue for Africa’s transformation.

Event Overview

The 2026 Mwalimu Julius Nyerere Youth Leadership Lecture therefore provides a platform for reflection and dialogue on what kind of leadership Africa needs to secure a sustainable, equitable future, and how to empower the next generation to embody those ideals.

This one-day collaborative event seeks to bridge these two traditions, the practice-oriented youth leadership model of JNLC and the scholarly tradition of CODESRIA, by providing a space where young leaders, scholars, and policymakers can reflect, connect, and co-create pathways toward a sustainable and inclusive future for Africa.

The proposed date for the event is April 13th, 2026, which is Mwalimu Julius Nyerere’s birthday. The event will therefore honour the legacy of Mwalimu Julius Nyerere while providing an opportunity to interrogate contemporary leadership and sustainability challenges faced by Africa’s next generation.

Objectives

  1. To reflect on Mwalimu Julius Nyerere’s enduring philosophy of ethical leadership, service, and Pan-African values in relation to Africa’s sustainability and transformation agenda.
  2. To strengthen networks and collaboration between young African leaders, scholars, and institutions such as JNLC and CODESRIA in advancing ethical, knowledge-driven leadership.
  3. To generate actionable insights and policy reflections that inform leadership development, public policy, and research on sustainability in Africa.
