The East African Community (EAC) since 2017 has been working towards making Kiswahili to be lingua franca of the community as the block is bound to increase the participation of the people of East Africa in the Affairs of the Community.
On July 5th, 2022, Cabinet approved the implementation of the 21st EAC Summit directive in Uganda to adopt Kiswahili as an Official Language of the community. Cabinet also recommended that the teaching of Kiswahili in primary and secondary should be made compulsory.
