JNLC Joins Thousands in the Makerere Run 2025

Julius Nyerere Leadership Centre (JNLC), led by Executive Director Dr. Nansozi K. Muwanga, joined thousands of participants in the Makerere Run 2025 (#MakRun2025), held on Sunday, August 17th, under the theme “Run the Hills for the Future.” A team of six staff members represented the Centre in the annual charity marathon, which has become Kampala’s largest university-led sporting event.

Hosted by the Makerere University Endowment Fund (MAKEF), #MakRun2025 brought together students, alumni, corporate teams, elite athletes, and city residents—running not only for fitness but also for a greater cause. The event celebrated endurance, unity, and purpose while channeling proceeds towards transformative community programs.

Objectives of MakRun 2025

This year’s edition was guided by three clear objectives:

  • Promote active physical lifestyles and mental well-being amongst 20,000+ students, 150,000+ alumni, Makerere Community and city residents across Kampala.
  • Channel a portion of proceeds to equip the Disability Support Unit.
  • Use a portion of proceeds to build a sustainable pool of funds to support Economically Disadvantaged Students over the long term.

A Legacy of Impact

The 2025 marathon built on the momentum of MakRun 2024, held under the theme Run for Students with Disabilities. Last year’s edition, flagged off by the Deputy Speaker of Parliament Rt. Hon. Thomas Tayebwa, attracted thousands of runners and marked the official opening of the Disability Support Unit—cementing the Run’s legacy as a driver of both health and social impact.

Race Categories

This year’s Run featured multiple race categories catering to different abilities:

  • Full Marathon (42KM) – The ultimate endurance challenge through scenic city routes (6:00 AM).
  • Half Marathon (21KM) – A thrilling test of stamina (6:30 AM).
  • The Challenge (10KM) – A fast-paced intermediate race (7:00 AM).
  • The Sprint (5KM) – A short and exciting run for casual runners (7:30 AM).
  • Fun Run (3KM) – A family-friendly experience promoting inclusivity and participation (8:00 AM).

Partnerships and Support

The success of #MakRun2025 was made possible through the generosity of partners, with NCBA Uganda and MTN Uganda as the main sponsors. Their support, together with the coordination of the Makerere University Endowment Fund, ensured a well-organized event that combined sport, philanthropy, and community engagement.

“This event has become one of the most significant social and community engagement activities in our university calendar, bringing together students, staff, alumni, corporate partners, and members of the wider public for a good cause.”

Vice-Chancellor, Prof. Barnabas Nawangwe
