In October 2022, the Julius Nyerere Leadership Centre (JNLC), in partnership with Makerere University, Uganda Management Institute, and the Mwalimu Nyerere Foundation, convened a landmark symposium to commemorate the centenary of both Makerere University and Mwalimu Julius Kambarage Nyerere. Held under the theme, “Imagining Together an African Future Led by Africa’s Youth,” the gathering brought together over 300 participants from 15 countries to reflect on Africa’s past, present, and future.
The symposium served as a platform for cross-generational dialogue on Pan-Africanism, identity, leadership, and Africa’s development trajectory. Distinguished scholars, policymakers, diplomats, and youth leaders engaged in conversations inspired by Mwalimu Nyerere’s legacy and examined the role of young people in advancing the continent’s aspirations. Through keynote addresses, thought-provoking discussions, cultural performances, and tributes, participants explored bold ideas aimed at fostering a more self-reliant, united, and prosperous Africa.
More than a commemoration, the symposium reaffirmed the enduring relevance of Pan-African ideals and underscored the importance of empowering the next generation to shape Africa’s future.
