Mwalimu Julius Nyerere, born on April 13th 1922 will mark 100 years on April 13th 2022. A product of Makerere University, he is one of Africa’s most prominent post-independence leaders. Between 1943 and 1945 Mwalimu Julius Nyerere attended Makerere University, where he obtained a teaching certificate. It was also during his time at Makerere that Julius Nyerere took his first steps into political activism when he formed an East African group to discuss the political problems faced by these countries, which at the time were still under British rule.
We at the Julius Nyerere Leadership Centre (JNLC) intend to join the broader Tanzanian community in Uganda consisting of, students, business women and men, entrepreneurs, as well as public servants to celebrate “Mwalimu Nyerere@100” startingwith a Bazaar to be held in the grounds of the JNLC at Plot 111 Pool Road, Makerere University on April 13th, 2022 starting at 9:30 to 6:00pm.
The event will provide students and Makerere community with an opportunity to celebrate with us one of the Africa’s most respected leader and a famous alumni of Makerere University. In addition to visiting the Centre, the day will also entail viewing curated videos of Mwalimu Nyerere, sampling Swahili food, browsing through Tanzanian artifacts. listening to Tanzanian music and viewing a Zanzibari dance performance. Generally, the day will be enjoyed while making it possible for those participating to know who we are, who our partners are and what they do.
